A retired professor of plant pathology at LSU, he died Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was 91 and a native of Wareshoals, S.C. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was a participant in Campaign Bougainville. Visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home Saturday, March 10 from 8 a.m. until services at 10 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Milford Walters. Burial at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He is survived by 2 sons, Wray Jr. and James Birchfield 5 grandchildren, Joshua, Brock, Chelsea, Kandi, and Madison 6 greatgrandchildren, Cameron, Jaelyn, Cynthia Marie, Isiah, Elijah, and Ava. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Nell Winfrey Birchfield his first wife, Betty Elizabeth Birchfield second wife, Doris Moore Birchfield son, Leslie Clay Birchfeld sister, Trece Pughe brother, Harold Birchfield and stepbrother, Wade Schnell.
