Winthrop Lindsey Mitchener, a 60 year resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2018. Lindsey was born in McCondie, MS on May 16, 1931, and was raised in West Point, MS. He attended Mississippi State University. Despite living in LSU country for years, he remained an ardent and loyal Mississippi State Bulldog fan.
Lindsey served in the US Army in the Korean Conflict and was a Purple Heart recipient. He and his wife, Helen, were married 65 years and raised three children. His job with Sperry Rand brought him to Baton Rouge in 1958. He eventually went to work for US Postal Service and retired in 1995.
Lindsey and Helen were active and loyal members of First Christian Church. He served for many years as deacon and a member of the Property Committee. He was a Boy Scout Leader with Troop 26 at First Christian Church for a number of years.
Lindsey is survived by his wife, Helen, and three children, Steve Mitchener (Vicki), Melanie Cobb (Jeff) and Melissa Mitchener. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Ashley, Morgan and Kallie and two great grandsons. He is also survived by his best friend and brother-in-law, Hester Smith of West Point, MS and sister-in-law, Jimmie Bennett of Perry, FL. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his furry companion, Fletcher.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Maggie Mitchener, and three sisters.
A service will be held Monday, August 20th at Resthaven Funeral Home at 11:00am with visitation beginning at 10:00am. A private burial will take place immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Christian Church, 8484 Old Hammond Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.
