William T. Taylor Jr., a resident of Baton Rouge, died at 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice. He was born Dec. 4, 1917, in St. Gabriel. He graduated from Romeville High School and attended LSU on an athletic scholarship and lettered three years in baseball. He received his bachelors degree in 1942, then volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps as an enlisted man. He spent four years in the service and took part in the invasions of Guam and Iwo Jima. He retired as a captain and was decorated for heroism, receiving the Bronze Star for valor. He attended Yale University and graduated in highway engineering and started his career with the Louisiana Department of Highways in 1947. He was promoted to highway director in 1971. He retired in 1980 as assistant secretary, Office of Highways, with 40 years of service. He was the recipient of the Charles E. Dunbar Career Service Award, elected to the Highway Hall of Honor and was a lifetime member of Louisiana Highway Engineering Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He leaves many memories of laughter, joy, and was an inspiration to everyone who knew and loved him. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2021 Stuart Ave., Baton Rouge, Thursday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Gerald Burns, celebrant. Interment following at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Clytie D. Taylor and sister and brotherinlaw, Annie Laurie and Dr. William Stewart. Preceded in death by his parents, William T. Taylor Sr. and Mary Le Place Taylor two sisters, Edna May Taylor and Mary Jewel Robert and three brothers, Frank J. Taylor, Norman J. Taylor and Robert W. Taylor. Pallbearers will be Jon Robert, Kevin Brumfield, Gary Gomez, Sean Lowder, Luiz Macedo and Vernon Decossas. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Gerald Barber and the staff of St. Josephs Hospice for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Josephs Hospice, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
