A resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 12:55 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Hospice of Baton Rouge. He was 88 and a native of Newton, Ill. Mr. Payne grew up in Vandalia, Ill., where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Ferrel Eakin, in 1939. They later moved to Centralia, Ill., where they resided for more than 25 years. He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a survivor of Iwo Jima. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Friday, Sept. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Graveside service at Resthaven Gardens of Memory at 11 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Merlin Liverman of Parkview Baptist Church. He is survived by his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara Jo Chaney, Sherry Lynn and Dr. Don Spindel, and Mary Beth and Jim Massingill; and two grandchildren, Mary Melissa Frazier and Kevin Brett Frazier. Preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, E. Ferrel Payne; parents, Roy and Franka Payne; and two brothers, Herman and R. Paul Payne. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church for more than 20 years and was an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman.
