William Berniard

January 1, 1922 — November 9, 2007

A retired state-registered electrical engineer with South Central Bell and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 4 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet. He was 85 and a native of Napoleonville. He was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a 1946 graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was a gymnast. He was an avid golfer and loved dominoes and traveling to his Navy reunions. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Monday, Nov. 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church on Tuesday from noon until Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Tom Ranzino, celebrant. Entombment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. Survived by his wife of 61 years, June Talbot Berniard; two daughters, Catherine Peters and husband Marty, New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Peggy Berniard, Natchez, Miss.; son, Tom Berniard and wife Charlotte, of Lafayette; daughter-in-law, Terry Berniard, of Lafayette; 10 grandchildren, Martin Peters, Scottsdale, Ariz., Charles Peters, New Philadelphia, Patrick Peters, Cleveland, Trey Berniard, Tallahassee, Fla., Michael Peters, Groton, Conn., Matthew Berniard, and Emily Berniard, both of Baton Rouge, Geoff Berniard, of Tallahassee, and Tiffany and Spenser Berniard, both of Lafayette; and two great-grandchildren, Martin Peters IV and Susan Catherine Peters, both of Scottsdale. Preceded in death by a son, Stephen Girard Berniard; brother, Clifford Berniard; and two sisters, Gladys LeBlanc and Sadie Frances Smith. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. He was a member of St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church and St. Jean Vianney Men's Club and served as a Eucharistic minister at various parishes throughout his life. He was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council 4030, member of American Legion Nicholson Post 38, Telephone Company Pioneers, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3784 and Don Carter's Bowling League. Special thanks to his neighbors Glen and Cornelia Conques for their special caring at this difficult time.
