A retired master mechanic with Nichols Construction Co. and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Ochsner Medical Center. He was 86, a native of Brookhaven, Miss., and a U.S. Army veteran. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting resumes at the funeral home on Wednesday, Dec. 31, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. T.W. Terral and the Rev. Carter Dey. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by his wife, Maxine Newman Smith; daughter, Wanda Bozeman and husband Gerald, Baton Rouge; son, Neal Smith and wife Diane, Livingston; sister, Cordia Starkey, Pumpkin Center; aunt, Bea Greer, McComb, Miss; grandchildren, Troy Bozeman and wife Shannon and Travis Bozeman; and great-grandchild, Kinslee Ann Bozeman. Preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Louise Smith. Pallbearers will be Troy and Travis Bozeman, Robert Ladner, Bill Summers, Edwin Newman Jr. and Danny Cotton. Honorary pallbearers are Ronald Joe Starkey, Gerald Smith and Felix Johnson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of the donor's choice.
