November 10, 1939 — December 21, 2024

Baton Rouge

Wayne Martin “Mitch” Mitchell, 85, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on December 21, 2024.

Mitch was a kind, gentle, and social man who cherished his relationships with others and lived his faith daily. A devoted Christian, he attended Sherwood Baptist Church/Cedarcrest Baptist Church, always actively supporting his church community.

He was a loyal brother and brother-in-law. He tragically lost his beloved brothers Norman Dale Mitchell in 1944 and James Mitchell in 1992. He visited his sister faithfully in the nursing home until her passing in 2018. Mitch spent countless joyful hours golfing, sharing coffee, and being a steadfast friend to his brother-in-law, who also passed away in 2018.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends and neighbors, Alla and John McMillian, with whom he shared meals and stories, as well as his pastor and dear friend, Bruce Worrell, and his family. Mitch lived a quiet, faithful life filled with love, kindness, and service to others.

Mitch graduated from Pride High School and studied Chemical Engineering at Louisiana State University. His career took him across the country with IBM, where he excelled as a Customer Engineer for 32 years, retiring in 2000. His work included training assignments in Los Angeles, New York, and Denver, as well as technology development and installations in Phoenix, San Jose, and Dallas.

Before joining IBM, Mitch served seven years in the Air Force, where he taught electronics and oversaw a radio-relay site in Italy. His time in Italy fostered his love for the Italian language and culture, and he treasured visits to Venice, Rome, and Florence.

Mitch was a former “Most Worshipful Master” of the Trinity Union Masonic Lodge and an avid senior golfer, enjoying countless games with his brother-in-law and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Walter and Ina Mitchell; his siblings, Norman Dale Mitchell, and his brother James Mitchell and his wife Erma Jean; his sister, Jean Waddle; and her husband, Hugh; his great-nephew, Dr. Troy Seguin of Boca Raton, FL, and great-great-nephew, Alexander Seguin of Baton Rouge, LA, as well as numerous other family members and friends.

He was survived by his sister’s children: Patsy Seguin and her husband Butch of Baton Rouge, LA; Carolyn Gurley of Denham Springs, LA; Norma Church and her husband Don of Chattanooga, TN; and Sandra Wells of Gautier, MS. Great-nephew Trevor Seguin and his wife Marlona of Chattanooga, TN; great-nieces Alicia Wells, Kimberly Hayduk and her husband TJ of Gautier, MS, and Nancy Seguin of Boca Raton, FL; and seven great-great-nieces and nephews: Adrian and Abigail Seguin of Chattanooga, TN; Jordan and Riley Shelton of Gautier, MS; and Delaney, Donovan, and Pierce Seguin of Boca Raton, FL.

He was also survived by his brother’s children: Carla Mitchell Dunaway and her husband Ricky of Lakeland, FL; Jamie Mitchell Pino and her husband Roy of Greenwell Springs, LA; Terri Mitchell Westbrook of Baton Rouge, LA; and Martin Dale Mitchell of Baton Rouge, LA. He also leaves behind many extended family members.
