Wayne John Stabiler, Sr. passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024. He was 86 years old. Wayne was born November 6, 1937, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Rosario Joseph (“RJ”) Stabiler and Vera Braud Stabiler. He was a graduate of Baton Rouge High School. After high school, he married the love of his life, Shirley Pate Stabiler. Little did he know that the young girl that had a crush on him in sixth grade would end up being his wife!
He eventually retired from Turner Industries, which in turn allowed him more time with his family and for his second passion, coaching and football. This was evident by his commitment to coaching the youth of Baton Rouge for more than 50 years. When he wasn’t at home, you could find him on the football field! His dedication, spirit and genuine care allowed him to leave a mark on the hearts of many young athletes.
Additionally, he enjoyed swimming and lifeguarding. Wayne was also a Golden Glove boxer and head of the LSU Marshalls for 40 years.
Wayne was a truly loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who lived every day for his family. It would be an understatement to say he was loved just as much in return. His physical loss hurts indescribably, but his memory is infinite.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Donald J. Stabiler, Warren S. Stabiler and Dennis R. Stabiler; and his son-in-law, William (“Bill”) F. Borne. Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Shirley Pate Stabiler; their devoted children Susan Stabiler Stone and her husband Steven Mark Stone, Wayne J. Stabiler, Jr. and his wife Luci Wiggins Stabiler, Wendy Stabiler Borne, and Chad M. Stabiler and his wife Elizabeth Lindsey Stabiler. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2025 Stuart Avenue in Baton Rouge. A Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
