Walter Garner, Jr.

Col. Ret Walter L. Barney Garner, Jr., a native of Clinton and a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at his home at the age of 85. Born on August 8, 1927, he was an active member of University United Methodist Church, a Charter Board Member of the Forest Park United Methodist Church in Panama City, Florida, and St. Johns United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge. He was a graduate of Clinton High School, an Eagle Scout, and scout leader for more than 20 years. At LSU he earned a BS in Education, an MS in Counseling and Guidance, and completed academic requirements for the Ed.D. He retired from the U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam where his last assignment was as Chief of Personnel, Andrews AFB, Washington D.C. and included responsibilities for servicing the units that operated the USAF Airborne Command Post and the Presidential Airlift Wing. In the military, he completed Professional Personnel Management School and Command and Staff College. Commendations included the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and both Army and Air Force Commendation Medals with Oak Leaf Clusters. After retirement from the military, he served as Supervisor of Guidance at the LSU Laboratory School and then served as MUFON State Director where he was an avid scientific investigator and researcher of anomalies and myths. Preceded in death by his parents, Walter Leon Garner, Sr. and Helene Norckauer Garner sister, Genevieve Garner Williams brothers, Mervin and Billy Garner. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Norma Alford Garner son, Gary Garner daughter and soninlaw, Ginger and Rip Manint grandchildren, Corey Chapman, Kristen and David Montgomery great granddaughter, Sophie Montgomery and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy. on Thursday, August 8, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. until funeral service at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Rev. Larry Miller and Rev. Carol Civils. Interment will be held in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to University United Methodist Church.
