Waldo Wally H. Haerther, 79, passed away May 10th at St. James Parish Hospital in Lutcher LA. Visitation begins at 1pm Saturday May 29th with a Memorial services following at 2pm at Trinity Lutheran Church 10925 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge LA.He was born in Newhall IA. As a high school student he sang live on WMX radio in Cedar Rapids IA. Wally studied Music, majoring in voice on a music scholarship to Valparaiso University. At this time he was recalled to active duty with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and stationed in Sendai, Japan where he met his future wife Cpl. Shirley Lutes. After this tour he returned to the U.S. and was assigned to the 6th Armored Division where he served as Battery Commander and S3 Officer. After his discharge he returned to school and earned a degree in business administration. He became the cofounder and president of consulting firms focusing on data systems for government entities private enterprise as well as designing systems around the country. After Wallys retirement he became involved in the community, serving on boards for Neighborhood Associations, schools, scouting, singing in a barbershop quartet, and volunteering at his church. And longtime volunteer for Hospice, Wally enjoyed singalongs, laughing and being silly with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Shirley Haerther, Baton Rouge, son, Richard Haerther of St. Petersburg. daughter, Roxanne Chief Gilbert Leachman ret. of Baton Rouge, son, Dale Melissa Haerther of Apollo Beach, son, Christopher Suzanne Haerther of St. Petersburg, sisters, Darlene Koering, IA and Mildred Richard Homan, AK, 7 grandchildren, 8 greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. German exchange students Dr. Nick Gebhardt, Lucas Felix Krisch. Preceded in death by son Marshall Haerther. In lieu of flowers please give to the Hospice of The Florida Suncoast, Largo FL or your local school music program.
