Verlie Gibson

July 28, 1928 — January 19, 2014

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Our mother, Verlie Gibson, was called by her heavenly Father on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at home after a nearly 5 year battle with cancer. She was 85. She was born July 28, 1928 in Edgerly, Louisiana, spent the first 35 years of her life in Sulphur, La. and after a brief move to DeQuincy, La. was a resident of Baton Rouge for the last 48 years. She married our father, G.C. Gibson when she was 18 years old. They divorced after 30 years of marriage but she was always proud of the fact that they remained lifelong friends. She was a 37 year employee of Gulf States Utilities. At the time of her retirement in 1988, she was a Customer Service Supervisor. After she retired, she was an active member of the Gulf States Entergy Sideliners retiree organization.
She also joined BRECs Seniors Exercise Class through which she met some of her closest friends. She was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and actively participated in their senior group, LLL, until her health would no longer allow. She was a spiritual woman and had a true love for God, her church and her church family. As her health declined, she was most happy to be in her recliner, watching Fox News with her pets, Kascha and Minou in her lap. She is survived by her son, Jim Gibson and wife Linda, and her daughter, Lisa Gibson Creekbaum and husband Wade. She leaves behind four grandsons, Gary Gibson, Taylor Creekbaum and Seth Creekbaum of Baton Rouge and Brandon Creekbaum of Monroe. She adored her grandchildren and, when they were younger, spent much of her retirement attending school functions and field trips. Her eldest grandson, Gary, lived with her for the last several years and that provided her with great comfort. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marcleat Landry Patin Castille and William Bill Patin, and one brother, William Bubba Patin, Jr. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Resthaven Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. with funeral services at 12:00 pm. Service will be conducted by Dr. George Haile, of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be her four grandsons, her cousin, Fred Ellender, Jr. of Sulphur and Dr. Shawn Dunn of Tyler, Texas. The family would like to thank all of our mothers friends who showed such care and compassion during her battle with this terrible disease. She treasured each and every one of you. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to the doctors who treated her, Dr. Michael DiLeo and, as she liked to call her, her angel, Dr. Anna Pou and are forever thankful for the care provided to our mother by St. Josephs Hospice. Special thanks to her sitters, Ms. Peggy, Ms. Helen and Ms. Kat for the love and compassion shown to our mother during her last days.
