Vera Dugger Matherne, 103, a long-time resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed on to eternity with our Lord on Easter Sunday, April 4 in the presence of loving family in Williamsburg, Virginia. Mrs. Matherne was born October 3, 1917, in Oil City, Louisiana to Harrison and Selma Dugger. Vera lived a long and rewarding life, from growing up on her family’s farm, attending college, becoming a teacher at the Natchitoches Cajun School - where she met and married her husband, receiving her master’s degree from LSU, and retiring as a high school teacher from Tara High School in Baton Rouge. She spent her long retirement supporting her church, playing bridge and traveling the world, but always made sure to have time and be present for her family.
Mrs. Matherne is predeceased by her beloved husband, Nolan, her son John, her parents, and eight of her siblings. She is survived by her sisters Joyce and Patricia, her daughters-in-law Nancy and Janice, her grandchildren Christopher, Stephen and Elizabeth, their spouses, and her nine great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday June 5. Her family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70816, followed immediately by the Celebration and internment. The family requests memorial contributions to St. John’s United Methodist Church (https://www.stjohnsbr.org), where Vera was a founding member, in lieu of flowers.
