Tonya Ann Gary, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was born November 17th, 1963, in Lafayette, Louisiana, and grew up in Thibodaux. On January 31st, 2017, at 53 years old she grew her angel wings and went to Heaven to be with Jesus. She was a loving mother of three beautiful girls, a daughter, and a friend.
Visitation and memorial services for Tonya will be held Sunday, February 5th, 2017 at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with visitation from 12:00am to 2:00pm, and memorial service to follow. Father Buddy Breaux of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in New Iberia will be officiating.
Tonya graduated from Edward Douglas White High School and continued on to receive an Associate's Degree in Legal Assistant Studies from Nicholls State University and a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. Tonya taught 2nd Grade at Wedgewood Elementary School for 16 years, and throughout her career, accumulated many students that hailed her as "the best teacher they had ever had." She dedicated her life to teaching her students to the best of her abilities, and although she put a lot of her personal time into preparing lessons and grading tests, she enjoyed every second of it. Tonya was raised by both parents whom were teachers, and had a natural ability to make learning for her students easy and fun. She will be dearly missed by faculty and students.
Tonya was a fun-loving and silly person who loved to joke and make people laugh. She always had a smile on her face, and always had everyone around her smiling. Tonya loved to cook and thought of it as a form of therapy and relaxation. She loved to try new recipes and invent new ways of cooking the same old tired dish. Tonya loved to fish. She wanted to move to Lafayette after retiring, to care for her Mother.
She is survived by parents, Arline Shinn, David Shinn and Olen Gary, along with dear friend, Reba Plaisance; her siblings, Tim Gary, Tina Gory and husband Jim Gory, Troy Gary and wife Tracy Gary; her daughters, Britney Buchanan and husband Jeffrey Buchanan, Nicole Moss and Fiance William Savard, Jr., Katelyn Moss and boyfriend Chris Hendl, and their father Robert Moss, III; her grandchildren, Cole Buchanan and Abram Buchanan; her nieces and nephews, Brandon Gary, Patrick Gary, Christina Burford, Ashley Hayman, Brandi Belanger, Brad Gary, Jamie Gary, soulmate Neil Maurer, along with the many other family members and friends.
Tonya is preceded in death by grandparents, Eve Gary, Jimmy Gary, Fadrey Breaux, and Otis Breaux.
The family greatly appreciates all the prayers and support we have received from dear friends during this difficult time. Family and friends are invited to attend the service and flowers or donations of any sorts are asked to be sent to Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
