Susie Lee Pepper Crews passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her children on September 5, 2016.
The daughter of Wyche and Lizzie Pepper, she was born in Yazoo County Mississippi on November 21, 1921 and was the 10th child born to their large family of 12 children.
She graduated with honors in literature from Delta State University in 1943. At Delta State she met Edward Lee Crews and they were married for 55 years. As a young bride she wrote for the Jackson Clarion Ledger and taught English at Murrah and Central High schools in Jackson, MS. She moved with her family to Baton Rouge in 1956 and used her talents in writing and communications at LSU for over 25 years. Her children all attended Baton Rouge High School and as an educator she was instrumental in preserving the school as it took on Magnet High School status.
Susie loved the natural world and found God's gifts in simple pleasures. She was an observer, always curious and interested in everyday miracles. She listened well and spoke with kindness, always. She loved Ingleside Methodist church and faithfully served there for over 40 years. Her faith was tangible to all who knew her.
She instilled her love for people and their unique stories in her six children: Susan Crews Keller of Nachitoches. La., Jane Crews LeBlanc, Baton Rouge, La, Beth Crews Keen, Ashton MD., Edward Lee Crews Jr., Meridian, MS, Missy Crews Howard, Baton Rouge, La., Kethley Alan Crews, Baton Rouge, La. She is also survived by her sons in law, Trey LeBlanc, Richard Keen, Jonathan Howard and devoted daughter in law, Nancy Huffman Crews; her grandchildren, Arland Keller Batson, Nolan Keller, Rachel LeBlanc Dews, Claire LeBlanc Crawford, William LeBlanc, Caroline Keen Ruggiero, Crews Keen, Jordan Keen, Katelyn Crews Edens, Laura Crews Ashley, Jessica Crews Barham, Susannah Howard, Elizabeth Howard. Susie often said "I must have been a good mother to have such loving grandchildren". She was proud and amused by all of them. She was also blessed with the love from her grandchildren's spouses and treasured her 14 great grandchildren.
Susie is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Crews; parents, and her beloved five sisters and six brothers. She is also preceded in death by her dear grandson, Alexander Hawkins Keen.
A family graveside service will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., on Saturday, September 10, 2016, followed by visitation from 11:30 AM -1:00 PM. A Memorial Service will be held in the Resthaven Chapel at 1:00 PM.
