Sue Hinson Granzin, lovingly known as "Mama Sue" to her family and friends, passed away at the age of 92 on October 31, 2016, at Ollie Steele Burden Manor in Baton Rouge.
She died from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Sue was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on August 6, 1924, to Jack L. Hinson and Werdna Paxton "Dot" Hinson. She lived in Baton Rouge her entire life, and spent her childhood years in the old Fairfields subdivision of this city, and her teenage years on Claycut Road. She graduated from Baton Rouge Junior High, and Baton Rouge High School and also attended Louisiana State University. She recalled wonderful memories of working for Delta Airlines at Harding Field (present day Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport) in the post-World War II years. On a blind date arranged by a cousin in San Angelo, Texas, she met Dr. Otto C. "Bob" Granzin, a recent graduate of Texas A & M School of Veterinary Medicine. Bob and Sue were married in January of 1947. Sue helped her husband Bob in establishing two veterinary hospitals in Baton Rouge.
Sue welcomed with great joy the birth of two girls, Susan Granzin Stevens and Patti Gay Granzin. She was a kind and loving mother who was active in her children's school and social activities and who instilled along with her husband a concern and love for the animal life on this planet.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Jack L Hinson and Werdna Paxton Hinson, and husband Dr. 0. C. "Bob" Granzin in January of 2012.
She is survived by her eldest daughter, Susan G. Stevens and her husband, Dr. Alfred G. Stevens, and her youngest daughter Patti G. Granzin. Also survived by her grandson, Chad C. Stevens and wife Jodi Stevens, and her great-grandsons, Carter A. Stevens and Gavin Greene. Also survived by her granddaughter Carla S. Thompson and her husband Adam J. Thompson, and her two great-grandchildren, Reese J. Thompson and Ryan Evangeline Thompson.
Sue was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. Services will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home on Jefferson Highway on Thursday, November 10, 2016. Visiting hours will take place that morning at 9 am until funeral services at 11 am. Burial to follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Pallbearers will be Alfred G. Stevens, Chad C. Stevens, J Cheston Stevens, Jr., Jack Stevens, Camile Gaspard and James Losee.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Ollie Steele Burden Manor, and also The Hospice of Baton Rouge. Although Alzheimer's is a tragic disease, Susan and Patti had the blessing of knowing their mother recognized them and knew what she meant to them and that they were with her holding her hands as she drew her last breath on earth as her Lord and Savior called her home.
