Shirley Marie Keen Mathews, age 69, a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on April 6th.
She was born on October 3, 1947 in Jacksonville, FL. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles Mathews, on November 12, 1965 in Marshall, TX.
She graduated from Byrd High School, Shreveport, LA, class of 1966. She continued on to Norton Business College in Shreveport, LA, where she excelled in academics and graduated in 1968. She worked as Executive Secretary for Network Long Distance and was quickly promoted to Human Resources Manager.
She was a leader in every organization that she was a part of - some of her noted positions included: President of the Business Professional Women's Club; President of the American Business Women's Association; Treasurer of the National Association for Women in Construction; and Treasurer of the Minden Germantown Festival for many years.
In her spare time, she was a gifted artisan in several fields - quilting, embroidery, and jewelry design. Her art portrayed American folklore and she was also a talented author of short stories and poetry.
Of all her talents, her greatest attribute was giving to others especially those in need. Shirley truly reflected the heart and light of God to everyone she met.
Shirley is survived by former husband, Charles Mathews; their children, Eugene Mathews (Baton Rouge, LA), Angela (Juan Pablo) Garcia-Salas (Baton Rouge, LA); brothers and sisters, Judith (John) Bancroft (Panama City Florida), Rebecca (Manny) Garcia (Canyonville, Oregon); Edward (Marty) Keen (Valparaiso, FL); Mary (Gwin) Edwards (Ruston, LA), and Patrick (Lori) Keen (Shreveport, LA); her father, E. Nathan Keen Jr. (Shreveport, LA).
She is preceded in death by her sister, Betty Gail Smith (Paul) of Bremerton Washington; and her mother, Dorothy Jeweleen Keen of Shreveport, LA.
Visiting hours will take place at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, LA on 4/9/17 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm until services at 5:00 pm.
