“For no soul can ever be replaced, and death claims a beauty and a magnificence that will always be missed.” –Jocelyn Soriano
Shirley Mercer Humble passed away peacefully on September 25, 2022, in the house her mother and stepfather built. Born on September 9, 1944, she was 78 years old.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, James Dale Humble; sister, Billie Smith; mother, Ruby Efferson; and father, Gene Mercer.
Shirley is survived by her children Terry Williams, Darla Sanchez, Bobby Young Jr., and Dawn Humble; by her grandchildren Jodi Bennett, Sarah Bernard, Glen Floyd III, Ashley Knott, and Amber Young; and by many great-grandchildren.
Extremely talented and always busy, Shirley cooked, sewed, kept house, embroidered, crocheted, decorated cakes, raised birds, grew crops and plants, painted, built furniture, and so much more. She truly was a renaissance woman. Nothing was out of reach for her.
She nursed her husband, Dale, through cancer three times. Tireless in her service to the ones she loved, Shirley was also stubborn and did things “the Shirley way.” She was a private woman who had a sharp wit and a strong mind. She will remain forever in the hearts, minds, and actions of those who love her. Rest easy, Shirley. Your work on Earth is done.
Visitation will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy. on Monday, October 3, 2022, from 9am until services at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley’s name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
