Shirley Haerther, 80, passed away October 7th at The Carpenter House Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA. She was born in Wyandotte, MI. She enlisted with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and appeared on the cover of Stars and Stripes wearing fatigues while firing a rifle from the prone position with caption, Annie Oakley Draws a Bead. Shirley was stationed at Sendai, Japan where in February 1951 she met her future husband, Wally Haerther. His first words to were, Hey Toots, how ya doin. She didnt speak to him again for weeks. Six months later they were married in Sendai and returned to the states,where Wally was stationed in Ft. Leonardwood and they began their family. Over the years, they moved to Cedar Rapids, Wyandotte, Rochester, Boston andBaton Rouge before moving to St. Petersburg. They remained together until her husbands passing in May of 2010. Shirley was the first Volunteer Coordinator for Hospice of The Florida Suncoast, spending eighteen wonderful years working with the Hospice. After retirment, she stayed in contact with her former coworkers, enjoying their company and camaraderie. She moved to Baton Rouge last year to live with her daughter and soninlaw, enjoying the choas and mayhem of her three granddaughters and eight greatgrandchildren running about. On November 22, she and Wally will be buried side by side at the Port Hudson National Cemetery in Louisiana. She is survived by her son, Richard Haether of St. Pertersburg daughter, Roxanne and Chief Gilbert Leachman ret. of Baton Rouge, son, Dale and Melissa Haerther of Apollo Beach, son, Christopher and Suzanne Haerther of St. Petersburg, seven grandchildren, eight greatgranchildren and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Wally Haerther and her son, Marshall Haerther. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Hospice of The Florida Suncoast, Largo, Fl your local school music program or The Carpenter House. Religious services will be on Monday, November 22, 2010 beginning at 11am at Trinity Lutheran Church located at 10925 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, La. 70815. Following the services, there will be a committal service at Port Hudson National Cemetery.
