Sherwin J. Guidry
of Baton Rouge, formerly of Montegut, LA died peacefully at the age of 94 on May 16, 2014 at 10:30am at Baton Rouge General Hospital.
Chabbie, the nickname most used by family and friends, is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Lee Peltier Guidry, daughters Sheri Lee Bergeron and husband Iven, and Kathy Henson. He also leaves his legacy of grandsons Troy Bergeron and wife Kristie and Todd Bergeron and wife Darla, and 7 great grandchildren, Taylor, Nicholas, Christian, Brooklyn, Logan, Gabrielle and Lawson. Also, one very special family member Billie and husband Dan, and countless nieces and nephews.
Chabbie was the last surviving child of 11 brothers and sisters, children of John and Ludovia Lirette Guidry of Montegut. Chabbie, raised in Montegut, became a leading citizen of Terrebonne Parish and throughout Acadiana. He was acknowledged for contributing to the preservation of the history of our Acadian heritage with several awards. He wrote four books: Le Terrebonne, Xplorin Terrebonne, Xplorin Acadiana, and Land of the Houmas. He gave presentations to the school children teaching them about how the Houmas tribe lived in the past. He also would entertain at nursing homes and assisted living facilities singing songs of the 30s and 40s and telling stories of the past. Chabbies life was fllled with many accomplishments such as his own Dixieland band Chabbie and the Dixie Six, published poetry and songs he had written including the official song of Terrebonne Parish: Slow Flows the Bayou. Articles written for the Houma Courier and Bayou Catholic newspapers included folklore, history and amusing entertainment about his beloved Acadian ancestry. He and Lee traveled all the United States except Alaska. Also went to Mexico, Canada, Carribean, Europe and the British Isles. If you knew Chabbie you would know he kissed the blarney stone. He was a rural mail carrier for 39 years until retirement. He couldnt be idle and became Justice of the Peace for 15 years. In Montegut, he was instrumental in forming the Top Citizen program and Song Fest at Christmas time, striving to create a community with his neighbors. He was a member of the Montegut Carnival Club, American Legion, and Lions club. Being an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church was also a K.C. member. In 2002 Chabbie and Lee moved to Baton Rouge with their family. We, his family, all know hes up in heaven playing in the choir of angels and singing his heart out, laughing, telling jokes, and living it up.
Visiting at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 12424 Brogdon Ln., Baton Rouge, 70816 from 1:00 pm until Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 20, 2014. Father Gerald Martin will officiate. Interment to follow at a later date in Montegut, LA. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
