A resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Carville, she died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2008, at 6:15 p.m. at her home. She was 85, a native of Carville and a retired occupational health nurse at Texaco Refinery in Convent. She was a World War II U.S. Army nurse. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home on Sunday, June 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, St. Gabriel, on Monday, June 9, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Frank Bass. Burial in the church cemetery. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Frances A. and Robert Melancon, of Houston and Vivian H. and F. Stephen Aucoin, of Baton Rouge; son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Gail A. Howatt, of Decorah, Iowa; three sisters, Vivian Walker, Necia Waggenspack and Virginia Contine, all of Baton Rouge; two brothers, T. Adrian Wintz, of Dutchtown and Landry A. Wintz, of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Robert B. Melancon, of Hawaii, Neil L. Melancon, of Houston, Theresa Howatt Ulmer, of Conway, Ark., and Nicole M. Aucoin, of Baton Rouge; and seven great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Lester C. Howatt; brothers, W.A. Bill Wintz and Charles Robert Bobby Wintz. She was a 1943 graduate of Hotel Dieu School of Nursing. Special thanks to the staff and residents at the Haven at Windermere; the staff from Hospice in His Care; and the staff of Feliciana Home Health, Dr. Sheldon Johnson, Dr. Vincent Tuminello, Dr. Kelly Clement and Dr. McWhorter. In honor of the celebration of her life, the family asks that joyful colors be worn.
