Samuel Young Jr.

February 7, 1946 — July 12, 2022

Samuel (Sam) Leslie Young, Jr, age 76, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on July 12, 2022 with the love and comfort of his three daughters beside him.

Sam was born in Harlingen, Texas as the eldest of six siblings. His family moved to Gonzales when he was an adolescent where he attended high school.  He later moved to Baton Rouge where he married the love of his life, Sondra Babin Young.

Sam graduated in Industrial Engineering from Louisiana State University, and also served in the Air Force National Guard.  He was Vice President of Merit Industrial Contractors, later employed at Baton Rouge Machine Works, and enjoyed almost 15 years coaching girls cross country at Parkview Baptist School and St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge.  As a coach, he led his teams to win multiple state championships, and more importantly, he made significant impact on and transformed the lives of many young adult athletes.  Sam was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

He often reminisced over the summers he spent as a child fishing from the pier with his grandfather and coming home to Nana’s freshly baked cinnamon rolls.  Family gatherings were also filled with fond memories of his childhood mischief and adventure.  As a father, Sam helped create fond childhood memories for his family by taking his daughters fishing, waterskiing, and camping.

Sam lived his life for so many others from a young age and throughout his entire life.  As a protective father, loyal husband, supportive brother and conscientious son, his love and devotion has meant so much to so many.  He will be missed, but will live in our hearts forever.

Sam is survived by his daughters, Lisa Young Wainwright, Tracy Young Sorel and husband Norman Sorel, and Ashley Young, his brothers Sloan Young and wife Mona, Scott Young and wife Diedre, and grandchildren Morgan and Luke Wainwright.

Sam is preceded in death by his wife, Sondra Babin Young, parents, Samuel and Bonnie Young, Sr, sister Susan Young, sister Sharon Young, and brother Stephen Young.
