A retired Marine branch manager for Exxon Co. USA, he died Monday, April 20, 2009, at his residence in Baton Rouge. He was 95 and a U.S. Army veteran. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home on Thursday, April 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by Todd Wells, pastor. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by his wife of 36 years, Bess R. Gardner; two stepdaughters, Deidra H. Meyers and husband Keith, and Brenda H. Holden; three stepsons and their spouses, Robert E. Jr. and Cheryl Hebert, Terryl W. and Cindy Hebert and Keneth C. and Sandra Hebert; 13 grandchildren and their spouses, Brett and Synmon Hebert, Kari and Hal Nedhanm, Stephen Hebert, Tiffany Hebert, Terryl T.J. Hebert Jr., Christy and Randy Fontenot, Jacob Hebert, Keithsha Meyer, Chase Meyer, Stasher Boudreaux, Alisha Boudreaux, Trisha Boudreaux and Mark Hebert; numerous great-grandchildren; nephew, Richard Richie O'Brien; and a niece, Carroll B. Loomer. Preceded in death by his parents, Carroll T. and Nell Gardner; sister, Susie O'Brien; and first wife, Elizabeth Moxley Gardner. He was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pa., in 1933 and achieved the rank of second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1935. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1935 to 1952. In 1965, he was commissioned as master seaman in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was affiliated with the Lupus Foundation, the local Meals on Wheels program and NOMADS. He was a member of the Pilotage Fee Commission under former Gov. John McKeithen in 1969. He was president of the Baton Rouge Marine Club from 1967 to 1968 and again from 1982 to 1983.
