Sam Houston Kimbrough, Sr., age 94, passed into the Lord's arms on July 31, 2018. Born on February 20, 1924 in Atoka, Oklahoma, he is preceded in death by his father Samuel Binnett Kimbrough of Texas, mother Mattie Dodd Kimbrough; wife Ruth Laverne Denham Kimbrough, daughter Carol Ruth Kimbrough Powell, and granddaughter Catherine Michell Kimbrough Brown. He is survived by son Sam Houston Kimbrough, Jr (Kim) and his wife Joan; son Rowland Keith Kimbrough and his wife Charlene; son-in-law Bill Powell; son Ray Dodd Kimbrough and his wife Jennifer; grandson Darryn Boyd Kimbrough and his wife Candace; grandson Caleb Keith Kimbrough and his wife Sara; grandson Nathan Charles Kimbrough and his wife Rachele; granddaughter Hannah Ruth Kimbrough; grandson Brandon Wayne Powell and his wife Katie; granddaughter Amber Powell Doiron and her husband Shaun; grandson Eric Dodd Kimbrough and his wife Erin; granddaughters Carley Rae Kimbrough and Allison Nicole Kimbrough; great grandchildren Jacob Brown, Haley Brown, Peyton Kimbrough, Alyssa Kimbrough, Alex Kimbrough, Ashlynn Kimbrough, Cohen Kimbrough, Asher Kimbrough, William Powell, Lucas Powell, Callie Doiron, soon to arrive Kaitlyn Doiron; and 1 great great grandson, Reed Allen Brown.
After joining the Air Force, he moved from Oklahoma to Baton Rouge in 1942. Here he met his wife Ruth at the Denham store on Jefferson Hwy. A neighborhood mechanic, he could fix anything he put his hands on.
Sam Houston Kimbrough was an Airplane Mechanic Gunner during WWII. A Navigator of B-17 aircraft, he notably participated in both the Air Offensive Europe from July 4, 1942 to June 5, 1944 and the Normandy Campaign from June 6, 1944 to July 24, 1944. He participated in 23 combat missions over enemy occupied territory from March 23, 1944 to August 7, 1944. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, 2 bronze battle stars, Air Medal, and 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and 1 Overseas Service Bar and was honorably discharged. A Mason, he was a member of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana F. & A.M., Central No. 442 F. & A.M., Baton Rouge, LA.
Services will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home at 11817 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70816. Wake will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, 5pm to 8pm. Viewing will be from 9am to 10am on Thursday, August 2, 2018 with funeral services following at 11am.
