Salvador Joseph Cashio was born in Maringouin on Sept. 4, 1922, and died in Baton Rouge on Thursday, May 21, 2009. He was born to John Cashio and Virginia Panepinto Cashio. He was predeceased by sisters Rose Ciaccio, Frances Cashio and Betty Gueno; and brothers Frank and John Cashio. He is survived by Dorothy Cashio, his wife of 59 years; children, Cathy, Brian, Keith, Carla and her husband, Wally Salame, and Craig; and grandchildren, Eric and Daniel. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Taylor, of Harahan. Sal attended Shady Grove High School in Maringouin and LSU in Baton Rouge as well as the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Like many young men from the Greatest Generation of World War II, he left college to join the U.S. Army in defense of his country. A member of the 84th Infantry Division the Railsplitters, Sal served in Europe, fighting in the pivotal Battle of the Bulge. At one point, his unit was captured by the Germans. Sal retired from the Louisiana Department of Revenue where he worked for more than 30 years. He served as an usher for many years for both St. Gerard Majella and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Churches. He was also a member of the American Legion. Sal was precious to all of us, his family, friends and colleagues, a man who never knew a stranger. Everyone was family to him. We will miss him for his story telling and witty conversation. We wish to express our gratitude to Sal's physicians, Frank Alvarez and Carl Luikhart for their care and guidance, and to all who loved Sal, we extend our heartfelt appreciation.
