Ruth Smith, 63, a native of Minden and a longtime resident of Prairieville, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, on Sunday, April 13, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation continues at Carpenter's Chapel Methodist Church in Prairieville on Monday, April 14, from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., with the Rev. John Locascio officiating. Burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Ruth was a past employee of the former American Bank in Baton Rouge, as well as the former Bank of Gonzales and St. James Bank in Gonzales. Ruth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother Nanny and a very precious sister to her family. Ruth also never met a stranger, everyone was her special friend. She loved life, truly living each and every day to the fullest Ruth had a pure heart and the most beautiful smile in the whole wide world You could get a glimpse of heaven by seeing the sparkle in her eyes that mirrored her tremendous faith in God. She truly enjoyed fishing, traveling, working in her flower beds and participating in the activities at her church when she was able to. Ruth will be sadly and Forever and Always missed by her family, her church family and a countless number of friends. If we could only see her now, resting peacefully in the arms of our heavenly Father. When tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're apart, for every time you think of me, I'm right there in your heart. God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. Ruth is survived by her loving and caring husband of 49 years, Lynwood; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Beverly Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Joe Cashio, all of Prairieville; grandchildren, Amanda Smith and Kevin Smith, both of Prairieville, Erica Howard and husband Philip, of Georgia, Trey Steele and wife Lindsay, and Brian Steele, all of Baton Rouge; stepgranddaughter, Nikole Cashio, of Baton Rouge; three sisters, lone Perot, of Ringgold, Lorene Keen, of Plain Dealing, and Clara Gamble, of Shreveport; two brothers, Perry Hickman Jr., of Shreveport and Ronald Hickman, of Heflin; mother-in-law, Esther Smith; two sisters-in-law, Teresa Cockrell and Carolyn Fuller, all of Minden; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dearly loved friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Perry Hickman Sr. and Irene Potts Hickman, who were both of Minden. Pallbearers will be Trey Steele, Brian Steele, Kevin Smith, Philip Howard, Kenny Balkom and Spencer Medine. Ruth's family would like to send out their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jay Brooks and staff at Ochsner Clinic, Dr. Maurice King and staff at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Lisa Comeaux, R.N., and staff at Hospice of Baton Rouge, including Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge. The excellent, personal and compassionate care that Ruth always received was greatly appreciated by her and the family.
