He was a devoted husband and father. A retired mechanical engineer and a resident and native of Baton Rouge, he died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at his home. He was 81 and a U.S. Air Force veteran with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Monday, Sept. 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting resumes at the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Jerard Banks. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Wascom Rutland; two sons, Kevin Rutland and wife Lori, Baton Rouge, and Keith Rutland and wife Erin, Hattiesburg, Miss.; two sisters, Phylis Lasserre and husband Henry, and Blanche Hamilton; brother, Charles Rutland and wife Donna, Detroit; and two granddaughters who were the light of his life, Shae and Sophie Rutland. Preceded in death by parents, Roy A. and Beulah Montgomery Rutland Sr. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association American Heart Association . He was a Mason, a member of the Boy Scouts of America and Broadmoor Baptist Church
