Rosemary Brumfield

July 3, 1943 — December 6, 2020

Rosemary Meyers Brumfield, 77, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020 at the Baton Rouge Gen. Medical Center of complications related to COVID-19. Rosemary was born in 3 July 1943 in San Francisco, California, to a Navy family, which resulted in her attending many schools in Virginia, Maryland, Guam, and Massachusetts, before settling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1956. After graduating from Central High School, she attended Louisiana State University, earning a degree in foreign languages. During this time she spent two years with the Peace Corps in Brazil on a school nutrition program in the states of Goias and Espirito Santo. In 1968 she married Beau Brumfield and went on to what she called “her real work” of raising four children. When she felt the task of raising her children was in hand and her marriage had ended, she earned certification as a teacher and received her Bachelors’ and Master’s in Education. She went on to teach for the next 25 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Munich, Germany; and Heidelberg, Germany. She was a gifted educator and was greatly loved by her students. Rosemary gave her abundant love to her family, the people around her, and animals. She cared passionately about the environment, fighting poverty and hunger, and the welfare of children. She excelled as a teacher, a mother, a sister, and a compassionate listener. She was the daughter of Richard C. Meyers, Jr, and Rosa Mae (Miller) Meyers.  Rosemary is survived by four sons: Jefferson and his former wife, Trish; Christopher and his husband Dan Cooke; Gawain; Eric and his wife, Suzie, and grandsons, Henry and Mitchell; a brother, Glen A. Meyers, and his wife, Gwen; and a sister, Madeleine (Meyers) Needles, and her husband, Charles. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews, godchildren, friends, “adopted” children, numerous students, and her cats, Hal and Dave. Rosemary’s favorite color was purple; her favorite show was Star Trek; and her favorite food was ice cream. She was a talented seamstress; she won prizes for her pies in high school; and she loved to swim when ever she got the chance.  Our world is a brighter and more beautiful place because of Rosemary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank in Rosemary’s name. A memorial Service will be held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the Summer of 2021.
