Rolla Roy “Buzz” Werline, Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family, at the age of 90. Buzz was born on October 1st, 1933, son to the late Rolla Roy and Sophy Nelson Werline.
He grew up in Minnesota, where he became an Eagle Scout, graduated from Alexandria High School, and worked in a local hardware store. He later moved to Montana to work. When the Korean Conflict arose, he voluntarily joined the US Army in 1953. He worked his way up to the rank of Corporal and enjoyed the job of mail clerk for his unit. While in Korea and Japan he also worked as a photographer for the military. During his military service, he earned the Korean Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal. When his time was over with the Army, he attended Concordia College where he majored in Business Administration.
After college, Buzz was employed at several companies as a sales representative for automotive parts. He was transferred to Charlotte, North Carolina where he met the love of his life, and knew he wanted to marry her. After having two children, they decided they wanted to raise their family in a warm climate so when the option came up to move to Baton Rouge, they took it.
When his children were young, Buzz took his family camping, fishing and water skiing as often as he could. In the early years vacations were spent traveling to Illinois to visit Alice’s parents and then to Minnesota to visit his parents. Buzz and Alice also obedience trained poodles, Chipper was their champion.
Buzz had always thought of opening his own business, so after being in Baton Rouge for a few years he and Alice opened their own Auto Parts store. Werline’s Auto Parts was in business for 27 years, where they also rented U-Haul equipment until they retired in 2002.
Though he grew up in Minnesota, Buzz quickly embraced the Louisiana culture; he loved the music, the food, New Orleans, and the LSU Tigers most of all.
After retiring, Buzz and Alice spent much time in their yard swimming in their pool and building koi ponds. While Alice loved to plant beautiful flowers, Buzz enjoyed them immensely. He took many pictures of their beautiful blooms. He was a member of the Deep South Koi Club. Buzz also enjoyed brewing his own beer.
Buzz is preceded in death by his parents, Rolla Roy Werline, and Sophy Nelson Werline.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Alice Person Werline; their daughter Wendi Werline Pounders (Anthony); their son Rolla Roy Werline III (Tina); his sisters Donna Werline Lucky, and Mina Werline Johnson; his grandchildren Abigail Pounders Fontaine (Kyle), Rolla Roy Werline IV, Sonia Werline Harris (Jaremiah), Eric Werline, Lance Werline, Archer Pounders, and Shepherd Pounders; his great-grandchildren Lillian Fontaine, Lila Fontaine, and MaKenna Werline.
