A resident of Baton Rouge, Robert Wicker Sr., 94, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at his home. Robert, born in 1914, was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to all. He grew up in Zachary and Baton Rouge, spending his early years as a merchant marine traveling the seas to many ports in the North and South Americas. He eventually settled in Baton Rouge and married Stephania Wilmot Wicker, with whom he had Sue Wicker, Robert Y. Buddy Wicker Jr., Jane Wicker Jarrell, and Michael J. Mike Wicker. His fifth child is Jill Wicker Dupont. Robert leaves grandchildren Kim Wicker Jones, Will Livingston, Trey Wicker and Elizabeth Wicker and five great-grandchildren and is also survived by his many nieces and nephews. Sadly, he also leaves behind his sister and best friend, Virginia Fortenberry. Robert achieved much in his 90-plus years, including a successful career at Standard Oil Co. and his own gasoline stations. He was a 32nd Degree Mason KCCH with more than 70 years' service and served as a worshipful master of both Istrouma and North East Lodges. He was also a loyal member of Immanuel Baptist Church. We will cherish his memory and joy of life but most of all his unconditional love for his family and friends. Special thanks to his caretakers, Tina Distefano, Emma and Roxanne with Amedisys Hospice Services, and especially a nephew, Frank Wicker. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Sunday, June 7, from 1 p.m. until service at 3 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Steve Johnson. A private graveside service will be held Monday at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
