The Rev. Dr. Robert Bob Milton Horne, a retired U.S. Army chaplain with the rank of lieutenant colonel, and a retired Presbyterian minister, born June 2, 1927, in Dallas, died at home in Atlanta on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at the age of 84. He was the son of George Mobley and Mary Hite Horne, and brother of Elsie Wayne Lindsey, all deceased. The Rev. Horne is survived by his wife, Rose DeVillier Horne daughters, Mary Ann Horne, Lori Ann Benoit and Charlotte Horne LaBorde sons, Mark Robert Horne and Ren Charles Benoit nine grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Christopher Lee Benoit and Michael Jude Benoit. Bob Hornes life as a sojourner began as a child. He lived in many places around the country and around the world. He graduated from Centenary College with a triple major in history, government and philosophy, then went on to Emory Theological Seminary and later graduated from Columbia Seminary in 1959. His sojourn through the military continued with tours to Korea 2, Vietnam, Japan and Germany, as well as several stateside assignments at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. Fort Campbell, Ky. Fort Hamilton, N.Y. and Fort Benning, Ga. His postmilitary service included six years at East Louisiana State Hospital as a social case worker and several years as a pastor in the South Louisiana Presbytery at Albany Hungarian, Bayou Blue and Raceland Presbyterian churches, as well as being a founding member and chairman of the Church and Society Committee. Upon his retirement in 1987, the Rev. Horne returned to Columbia Seminary, where he was awarded a doctor of ministry in 1990. During his retirement, he served several supply pastorates in the Greater Atlanta Presbytery and devoted great energy to his passion, peacemaking and his involvement with the Presbyterian Peacemaking Committee. Bob Horne was a faithful, attentive and loving husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, brother, brotherinlaw, uncle, son, nephew, coworker, neighbor, friend, counselor, pastor, chaplain, newspaper reader, LSU Tigers fan, Atlanta Braves fan and a tireless advocate for peace, justice, the poor and the disenfranchised. Bob was a lover of mountains, forests, nature, music and other fine arts, figure skating and beauty in all its forms. Bob was a lifelong student of history, government, science, philosophy and theology. He encouraged scholarship in others. He fostered a respectful free exchange of diverse and opposing ideas, and he discouraged ideological polarization and divisiveness. Bob most admired the life, works and principles held by Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Dietrich Bonheoffer. Visitation will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. and then burial at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Mausoleum, 11817 Jefferson Highway. A memorial service will also be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road, Tucker, Ga., on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate by check to Amedisys Hospice of Lawrenceville in memory of Robert M.
