A retired mechanical engineer at BASF and resident of Baton Rouge, died Friday, April 6, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. He was born June 30, 1935 in Marysville, Michigan to George J. Clara M. Hazey. A devout Catholic, he served God with humility and grace. In 1959, he married Jacquelyn A. Lozon and during their 38 years of marriage had 5 children, 6 grandchildren and 1 greatgrandchild. A strict father, instilling strong family values, led a life of selflessness and giving. Being an airplane mechanic in the Air Force Reserves, he developed a love for flying. Earning his pilots license in 1976, he flew all over the country and for Civil Air Patrol and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Interestingly, though he had the analytical mind of an engineer, music and dancing was a lifelong passion. He could make any space a dance floor and any song a jitterbug. Always putting others before himself, he actively volunteered in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol, American Red Cross, St. George Fire Department among many others for the past forty years. He lived a full and satisfying life, with many interest and hobbies, though he always had time for family and friends. He possessed a special quality for making people feel at ease combined with intelligence and objectiveness that endeared him to so many that sought his advice and leadership. The loss of our Dad will be felt deeply and long lasting. He was preceded in death by his parents, George J. and Clara M. Hazey, and his wife, Jacquelyn Lozon Hazey. He is survived by his five children, Robert C. Hazey, Jr. and fiancee Nicole Buggs, Richard I. Hazey and wife Susan Castleman, Colleen I. Beatty and husband David Beatty, Shirlee A. Alfandre and husband Mike Alfandre and Jacquelyn M. Hazey sister, Colleen Minteer 6 grandchildren, Kristin Alfandre, James Hazey, Ciara Hazey, Michael D. Beatty, Natalie Alfandre, and Zachary Beatty 1 greatgrandchild, Nicholas Walker and close friend, Cecelia Bundick. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, April 13, 2012, at 9 a.m. at St. Patricks Church followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the American Cancer Society or American Red Cross.
