GRODNER, ROBERT MAYNARD

Robert Maynard Bob Grodner, PhD, 89, a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, passed from this life on November 29, 2014 surrounded by all his children and grandchildren. A memorial service for Bob will be held at the William B. Reilly Memorial University United Methodist Church on December 4, 2014 with visitation beginning at 10:00 am and the service beginning at 12 noon, with a brief interment ceremony to follow at Resthaven Garden of Memories.


Bob was born on June 22, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the Navy during World War II, and saw action on Iwo Jima. After being discharged, he graduated from Brown University in 1949. Bob received his Masters of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in 1955 in mutation genetics and his PhD from Louisiana State University in 1959 in food science. After receiving his PhD, Bob married Mary Lula Laslie Grodner. He then served a brief stint as head of the Biology Department at Otterbein College in Columbus, Ohio. Bob returned to LSU in 1963, as a professor in the Food Science Department. He became a full professor and remained with the Food Science Department for over three decades pursuing both research and teaching. During this time, he authored or coauthored many papers published in numerous scientific journals. Bob also acted as a consultant to many national and international food companies. He was also very active and served in executive positions in national and international organizations dealing with science, food science and food toxicology, including Tropical and Subtropical Fisheries Conference of the Americas, the Institute of Food Technologists, Research Development Associates for Military Food and Packaging, Inc., and Sigma Xi. He was also active in the University United Methodist Church, and served as Assistant Scoutmaster and Troop Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 50 sponsored by the church for many years. Bob also participated in the LSU Kiwanis Club serving on the Board of Directors and as President. In addition, he was the long time treasurer for the LSU Faculty Club, Inc.


Bob is survived by his two children, Robert Marshall Grodner and Mark William Grodner, and his five grandchildren, Eulalie Tessier Tess Grodner, Eugenia Berry Jeannie Grodner, Gabrielle Virginia Gabby Grodner, Robert Marshall Max Grodner, Jr., and Isabella Laslie Grodner. He was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Mary Lula Laslie Grodner, and his parents, Dorothy S. Grodner and Max S. Grodner.
