Robert Cobb

A resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Frankfort, Ind., he died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at his home. He was 65 and a retired sergeant major in the U.S. Marine Corps with 30 years and 7 days of service. Visiting will be at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Tuesday, June 2, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Jack Varnado. Sgt. Maj. Cobb started his career as a U.S. Marine on Aug. 24, 1960. He served honorably at all his duty stations which included San Diego, Concord, Calif., Iwakuni, Japan, Camp Lejeune, N.C., USS Springfield, Republic of Vietnam, Camp Pendleton, Calif., USS Constellation and Tallahassee, Fla. He was promoted to sergeant major in June 1982 and served as sergeant major of Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465, sergeant major of the 11th Marine Amphibious Unit, sergeant major of the 11th Marine Regiment and sergeant major of the 4th Marine Division. His awards and decorations include the U.S. Navy Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with eight awards, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Overseas Deployment Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, Republic of Vietnam Civic Action Medal with palm and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he served as a lieutenant colonel at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center for 12 years before retiring. He was a life member of the Marine Corps. League, the VFW, Fleet Reserve Association and the Moose Lodge. He is survived by a sister, Glenda Sheets, of Avon, Ind.; sister-in-law, Dora M. Cobb, of Frankfort; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel Cobb; parents, Thelma Louis and Forrest R. Cobb; and brother, Phillip Cobb.
