Ralph Cappiello

October 2, 1933 — May 3, 2012

Ralph Louis Cappiello of Baton Rouge passed away on May 3, 2012 after valiantly fighting cancer for four years. He was born in New Orleans on October 2, 1933 to Louis R. Cappiello and Bernice Hingle Cappiello. He grew up in Port Sulphur. He attended Holy cross catholic School and graduated from Port Sulphur High School. He served in the U.S. Navy stationed at Long Beach Naval Base, CA. After completing his two year obligation, he received an honorable discharge and returned to LA. He graduated from LSU in 1962 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Management. He married his high school sweetheart Peggy Gene Fontenot on May 27, 1953 and welcomed their son into the world on their tenth wedding anniversary and his daughter nearly 3 years later. He retired from Shell Oil Company after 29 years, serving in various capacities off the Louisiana coastline, where he received many safety and performance awards. He worked in Brazil with Pecten, the international section of Shell Oil Co. After retirement, he consulted in Cote dVoir, Africa for one year and then returned to Baton Rouge. He volunteered with the Boys Scouts, Trinity Episcopal Church, and Baton Rouge Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He took joy in being a grandfather, sharing his mastery of cooking, woodworking, building, poetry, painting and the art of stained glass with his five grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Peggy gene Fontenot Cappiello, daughter, Toni Jean Cappiello Ponniah and husband Sathibalan, Son John D. Cappiello and wife Wendy, Brothers Robert L. Cappiello and companion Shirley Becnel, wife Janice, deceased in 1998 and James L. Cappiello and wife Paula SisterinLaw Cordelia Cappiello. Grandchildren Asha and Gabriel Ponniah and Carly, Sarah and Rachel Cappiello, and nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father and brother Charles E. Cappiello.
Special Thanks to the staff at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Ollie Steele Burden Manor, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, St. Josephs Hospice, and his physicians and the community of OSB, especially John Cado.
The family invites family, friends and prior coworkers to join in celebrating his life. Visitation will be Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 5 pm till 8 pm and will resume on Monday at 8:30 am until service at 10 am at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, burial at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Josephs Hospice or the charity of your choice.
