Philip Grove

April 9, 1921 — September 20, 2008

A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather went to rest in peace with the Lord on Saturday evening, Sept. 20, 2008. He was 87. He was a very honest and patriotic man who flew the American flag each day as a testament to his patriotism. He was a native of Chicago. He obtained a bachelor's degree and a juris doctorate degree from the University of Illinois. He obtained the rank of captain in the U.S. Army and honored his country by serving overseas in World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Following his graduation from law school, he moved to New Orleans where he worked for The California Co. and Chevron as an oil and gas landman for many years. He then became an independent lease broker and lived in New Orleans until he retired. He was a member of the Petroleum Club, Plimbsol Club, and Petroleum Landman's Association of New Orleans. He was a member of the board of trustees of St. Martin's Episcopal School in Metairie and a member of the Krewe of Bacchus. He traveled extensively around the world with his devoted wife of 50 years, Jean, and enjoyed fine wines and food. He moved to Baton Rouge in 1994 to be closer to his grandchildren. Survived by his wife, Jean Holman Grove; two children, Brian Allen Grove, and Stacy Grove Butler and her husband, Brian Butler; and five grandchildren, Philip Grove, Elisabeth Butler, Laura Grove, Brandon Butler and Emily Grove. Preceded in death by his six brothers and a sister. The family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors at SICU at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and the Butterfly Unit of Hospice of Baton Rouge. In keeping with his wishes, the burial service will be private for immediate family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of Baton Rouge, 9063 Siegen Lane, Suite A, Baton Rouge, LA 70810.
