Oneil Joseph (O.J.) Landry, Jr. died Friday, December 30th at The Carpenter House after a brief illness.
OJ. was born in White Castle, Louisiana, the son of Oneil Sr. and Agnes LeBlanc Landry and grew up on the family sugar cane farm on Cora Texas Plantation. As a high schooler on White Castle's six-man football team, he was the school's first ever player to be recognized and selected to a state team.
He attended LSU and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1966. O.J. spend his entire business career as an employee of Ethyl Corporation in Baton Rouge and then made the transition to Albemarle Corporation in Magnolia, Arkansas.
He was married to Carole Theriot, also from White Castle, Louisiana, for 52 years and together they produced two exceptional children, David Oneil Landry, of Moorpark, California, and Suzanne Camille Gomez of Baton Rouge. O.J. was very proud of his five remarkable grandchildren, Gabriella Suzanne Gomez of Shreveport, Spenser Paul Gomez and Lillith Ayn Gomez of Baton Rouge and Ethan Oneil Landry and Maya Katherine Landry of Moorpark, California.
One of the highlights of his life was coaching, along with Diane Pirello, a boys little league softball team in 1980 that won the Baton Rouge city championship. Upon his retirement, O.J. gave back to his community by volunteering as a jambalaya cook along with his brother, Raymond, at the annual Carpenter House fundraiser and also as a volunteer with Carole at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. He was recently recognized with the 2015 Legion of Merit award by the Food Bank for his years of service.
He is survived by his elder brother Douglas and wife, Carol, of Plaquemine, sister-in-law Linda of St. Gabriel, sisters, Darlene of Baton Rouge, Pam Davis and husband, Scott, of New Roads, loving nieces and nephews and many Landry, LeBlanc, and Boudreaux cousins and special friends, Francelle, Becky, Ida, Charlie, Dale, Carl, Diane and many, many others.
Those family members who preceded him in death include his parents and his older brother, Raymond.
A private graveside service will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA and at a later date family and friends will be invited for a celebration of his life.
