Naylor Matthew Cragin died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at his home in Baton Rouge after a lengthy battle with cancer and Alzheimers. He was 89, born in Gloster, Miss., and grew up on Cinclare Plantation, Brusly. He graduated from Brusly High School and then enrolled at LSU, Baton Rouge. His education was interrupted when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Dec. 8, 1941. He served in the South Pacific on the USS Hercules and USS Arcadia during World War II and later during the Korean War. In 1981, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander. While in the Navy, he was sent to Harvard Graduate School. He later returned to LSU, completing his degree in accounting and obtaining his CPA. He was employed at Union Federal Savings and Loan Association which later merged with Capital Savings Association. During his employment, he served as executive vice president, chief financial officer and director. He retired after 31 years of service. He continued to serve in his community over the years as a member of the American Legion Nicholson Post 38, an East Baton Rouge Parish School Board member, president and member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and The Louisiana Chapter of Controllers Financial Officers, and member Emeritus of the State Society of CPAs. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Flora FloGuerin Cragin four children: son, Mike Cragin and wife Ronnie, of Baton Rouge daughter, Pati Cragin Rudisel and husband Don, of Baton Rouge and sons, Tim Cragin and wife Louise, of New Orleans, and Kelly Cragin, of Palm Coast, Fla. PawPaw had a very tender heart towards his seven grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren: Stacey Cragin Hebert and husband Chris and their four children, Elizabeth, Cameron, Adam and David, of Slidell, Kerry Cragin, Holly Rudisel Owens and husband Robert and their two boys, Connor and Carson, and Matthew Rudisel, all of Baton Rouge, and Allison, Patrick, and Sally Rose Cragin, of New Orleans. Also survived by two of his three sisters, Edith Foy and husband C.E., of Baton Rouge, and Helen Johnson, of Lake Forest, Calif. Preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Jessie Cragin and sister, Wesley Elizabeth Cragin. Even through the later days of his illness, Naylor still retained the sense of humor and quick wit that he was known for among family and friends. Besides his love for his family, he will be remembered for his enjoyment of horses and dogs love of gardening, especially hot peppers and deep love and commitment to the U.S. Navy and all things patriotic. Visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, Monday, Sept. 27, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at St Aloysius Catholic Church on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Interment of his cremains at Resthaven Gardens Of Memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Josephs Hospice, Cancer Services of Baton Rouge or Baton Rouge Alzheimers Association.
