Miriam 'Mimi' Louise Slocum nee Cobb passed peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at her home in Covington following a brief illness. The daughter of Alfred Montgomery Cobb and Louise Thompson Cobb, Miriam Slocum was born May 3, 1928, in Jena, where she resided until graduating from Jena High School in 1945. She then attended LSU in Baton Rouge from which she earned a bachelor's degree in music education in 1949. While at LSU, she was president of her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, and nominated for Darling of LSU. Mrs. Slocum was also a member of Delta Gamma Delta, the Wesley Foundation, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Confederacy. After briefly teaching at the Newellton School, she was wed to Jere R. Slocum in 1950. The couple moved abroad, residing and raising their three children in Europe, the Far East and the Middle East, until they retired to Tchefuncta Estates in Covington in 1988. Mrs. Slocum was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Celia Renee Slocum; grandson, Terry Duncan Porter; and brother, Alfred David Cobb. Survived by her son, Jere R. Slocum Jr.; daughter, J. Michelle Slocum; and grandsons, Christopher M. Hill and Sean H. Jones. Mrs. Slocum will be interred at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Baton Rouge following private burial services.
