Michael Terrance Shay

Michael Terrance Shay, age 81, passed away on December 30, 2024. He was a native of Big Spring, Texas, but was reared in Ohio. He began his educational journey at York College. It was there that Mike met Joyce, the love of his life for 59 years. After serving four years in the United States Air Force as a communications specialist, he returned to Ohio to complete his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Toledo. He excelled in basketball during his time at York College, the Air Force, and the University of Toledo. Mike’s career brought him and Joyce to Baton Rouge in 1972, where his skills in the field of special education earned the respect of his students and their parents. He would continue his studies at Louisiana State University where he received his master’s degree in education. 

Mike had always enjoyed participating and watching sports, particularly basketball and golf. He especially enjoyed watching his two granddaughters in all their athletic and extracurricular endeavors.

Mike is survived by his wife, Joyce; their son, Jeff (Heather); granddaughters, Mikalyn and Carli; sister, Mary Sue Nicora (Dan); brothers, Steve (Paula), John, and Chris (Sarah); and many loving nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Anne Shay. 

The family would like to give special thanks to Clarity Hospice of Baton Rouge with special regards to his nurses, Terri and Raven, and Chaplain Williams. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in Mike’s name to Clarity Hospice of Baton Rouge or the American Heart Association. 

The family will hold a Celebration of Life for Mike on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the home of Mike and Joyce Shay.
