Melva Ruth Shumaker Burchfield, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, October 17, 2013. She was born in Winston County, Mississippi on September 23, 1931, and grew up there surrounded by a large and loving family. Upon graduation from high school, Melva moved to Jackson, Mississippi to attend business school and work for the Mississippi Military District. She landed the job of her dreams in 1954 when she became the wife of her childhood sweetheart and subsequently the mother of three. She is survived by her loving and faithful husband of nearly sixty years, Oliver Keith Burchfield. She will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses, Steve and Paige Burchfield, Bill and Pam Burchfield King, and Kevin Burchfield seven grandchildren, Dara Wascome, Bradley King, Ali Millisor, Lori Yokem, Zachary Burchfield, Taylor Burchfield and Kaylee Burchfield and six greatgrandchildren, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Joshua King, Bo and Alton Wascome, and William Yokem. Melva was a long time member of University Baptist Church and especially loved her Happiness Sunday School class. She was known by all who knew her as great cook, and her passion was serving friends and loved ones through her talents in the kitchen. Her family wishes to thank her doctors, Dupont, McCarthy, Stagg, Russell, and Gremillion for going above and beyond and for the care that she received. Thank you also to the kind caregivers from St. Joseph Hospice. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Visitation will be held at University Baptist Church, 5775 Highland Rd., on Monday, October 21, 2013 from 10 am until funeral service at 11 am, conducted by Dr. George Haile and Dr. Tommy Harrell.
