Mary Dardenne Michel, a beloved high school English teacher and cherished member of her community, passed away on January 31, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on April 2, 1949, in Baton Rouge, LA, Mary dedicated her life to education and service, leaving a profound impact on all who knew her.
Mary graduated from St. Joseph's Academy. She furthered her education at Louisiana State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education and Journalism.
Her dedication to teaching inspired countless students, and she made a lasting impact as a high school English teacher for 34 years in Ascension Parish public schools.
Throughout her life, Mary demonstrated a profound commitment to her faith and community. She served as a Eucharistic minister, participated in bible study classes, and contributed her writing talents to the St. George magazine - reflecting her deep spiritual devotion.
As a member of the St. Joseph's Academy Alumni Association, the St. George School Board, and the Fair Committee, Mary was deeply invested in the educational landscape of her community.
Mary was known for her love of reading, cross-stitching, watching movies, dining out, and most importantly, spending quality time with her family and friends. Her warm spirit and vibrant personality drew people to her, making her a beloved figure in both her personal and professional circles.
Mary is survived by her three daughters, Ashley Michel Spillman (Russell), Katie Michel Thorne (Adam), and Jennifer Kosinski (Claude); siblings, John Dardenne and his wife, Sharron, Betty Backstrom and her husband Steve, and Martha Dardenne. Mary also leaves behind her grandchildren, Madeline Thorne, Mackenzie Thorne, Ella Grace Kosinski, and Garrett Spillman, who were the lights of her life.
She was predeceased in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Edward Michel; her parents, Rita Babin Dardenne and Roy Dardenne Sr.; her brother, Andy Dardenne; her husband’s parents, Buddy and Thelma Michel; brother-in-law, Stephen Michel; and sister-in-law, Sarah Gardner.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. George Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, followed by a memorial service beginning at 12:00 PM. Inurnment will follow in the St. George cemetery following the service.
The family would like to invite friends and family to a reception following the service at the Kleinpeter Activity Center.
