Mark Smith

Mark Andrew Smith, age 31, a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on 5 September 2016, after suffering a sudden onset life-threatening brain hemorrhage two days earlier.

Mark was an accredited court reporter and closed captioning professional who practiced in the local Baton Rouge area for several years. He attended Most Blessed Sacrament School where he was an altar server for the Church, was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout, attended Catholic High School Baton Rouge where he was class co-valedictorian and a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at LSU Baton Rouge with a specialty in the Japanese language, and attended the Louisiana Court Reporters' Post Graduate Training, where he was the fastest student to ever finish the demanding court reporting program. He was accredited in court reporting in Louisiana, California, and nationally. Mark volunteered for many local social assistance programs including Mother Teresa's battered womens' program, local food assistance programs, prison ministry, and related volunteer programs.

Mark is survived by his mother, Joan Wegmann Smith, his father, William Gary Smith, and one brother, Matthew Douglas Smith, MD, all of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his beloved maternal grandparents, Louis and Vera Wegmann, of New Orleans, Louisiana, and his paternal grandparents, Roger and Margaret Smith, of King, North Carolina.

A funeral mass will be held at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 15615 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11AM. Visiting by family and friends starts at 9:30am with the rosary following at 10:00am. Burial will follow at Lake Lawn Cemetery, Metairie, Louisiana, where he will lie in rest in the family sanctuary with his maternal grandparents.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to OLOL ICU neuro unit nurses and other medical staff for the excellent care provided to Mark while hospitalized. Special thanks also go to local area Catholic priests Father Andrew, Father Brent,
Father Don, and Deacon Pete, and laity who provided comfort and the Catholic sacraments to Mark during this difficult time. The family requests that masses be celebrated for Mark in lieu of flowers and donations.
