Marjorie Moss

January 12, 1926 — January 7, 2015

Margie was born in Sherman, Texas, on January 12, 1926, and nearly made it to her 89th birthday. She enjoyed a happy childhood in Texas with her beloved parents, Truman and Vivian Holley, and her younger sister, Dorothy, whom she adored and remained close to throughout their lives. Growing up in Texas, she loved animals and her family and friends. She played the snare drum in high school, loved dancing and aspired to be an artist for Walt Disney. Margie graduated from college with a degree in art and clothing design, and some of her designs were purchased by a pattern company. She worked in advertising, executing beautiful advertising layouts for first The White House in Beaumont and then Dalton's. She met her husband, Peewee Moss, on a blind date arranged by Betty Dawson and Jimmy Stewart. Peewee and Margie married, and she wore a beautiful lace wedding dress that she had designed and made herself, as well as the bridesmaid dress her sister Dorothy wore. After sharing a tiny apartment on Chimes Street in Baton Rouge, Margie and Peewee celebrated their early years in Destrehan, during which her children Michael (Mike) and Patricia (Trish) were born. Margie was a devoted wife and mother, who not only loved her children, she enjoyed them and made sure they always knew that. She remained at home with her children until they were school age, at which time she and her family moved to Baton Rouge, which became their home for the duration of their lives together. Mamie worked for D. H. Holmes in downtown Baton Rouge and eventually became head of advertising there. However, she found her true calling when she returned to school to earn her Master's in education from LSU and to become an elementary school teacher. She loved teaching children, and so many children and student teachers benefited from her gifted skills in, mostly, her 3rd grade classrooms at Lanier and then Shenandoah. After retiring, she once again picked up her paint brush and resumed her passion for art and painting. She took further classes under Norma Roy, and she and Peewee shared over 30 years of wonderful retirement dancing, traveling, eating out with friends, cooking and sharing amazing meals with her family and enjoying her beautiful grandchildren, whom she loved so much. When asked what the smartest thing she ever did was, she wrote: "I think getting married to Peewee and having sweet children." When asked about the proudest she ever was, she answered, "My babies were both beautiful . . . and grandbabies!" Sweet Mamie, as she was lovingly called by her entire family, was simply the best person we will ever know - the most selfless, loving, giving person in our experience. Everyone who knew her will miss her so much! The family will never be able to fully thank Julie Moss, whom she lovingly referred to as "her daughter" and who provided such loving care for Mamie in her home during these final years with the support of Linda Scott and Diane and Leanna from Hospice of Baton Rouge.

Marjorie is survived by daughter Trish Moss King and her husband Paul; daughter-in-law Julie Moss; grandchildren Catie Moss McCluskey and her husband Steve; Brandon King and his wife Arielah; Sean Moss and wife Alesha; Ian King, and "adopted" grand-daughter Julie Theresa Smyth Brown; and great-grandchildren Drew Michael McCluskey, Cade Joseph McCluskey, Charlie Sue Moss; Rosalie Frances King, and Lyle Emory King.
