Marjorie "Margie" Higgins Frey, the heart of our family and love of our lives, lost her battle with pulmonary fibrosis on Sunday, February 15, 2015. Born in New Orleans on January 7, 1931, she spent her childhood in New Orleans, graduated from John McDonogh High School, then worked for the phone company until she married and moved to Baton Rouge, where she and her husband, Fred, raised their family and have resided for almost sixty years.
Margie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, Catholic Daughters, Tara Garden Club, Busy Bodies Exercise Group and was a Thursday morning volunteer "pink lady" at Woman's Hospital for almost thirty years, working her last shift the day before she was unexpectedly hospitalized.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Frederick W. Frey, Jr.; their children, Daniel J. Frey and his wife Patty of Lafayette; Peggy Frey Magette and her husband, James W. Jr, of Hoover, AL ; Judy Frey Bayhi and her husband, Paul, of Baton Rouge and Christopher G. Frey and his wife, Teri ,of Pell City, AL. She was affectionately known as "Grammy" to her nineteen grandchildren, Liz, Evan, and Tyler Frey; Sarah and Angela Frey; Janna, Jay and Joshua Magette; Branden, Jonathan and Katelyn Bayhi; Samantha, Megan, Donald, Andrew, Margaret Mary, Matthew, Emily and Jessica Frey. Margie leaves behind many friends who affectionately refer to her as their "surrogate mom", drawn to her gentle heart, advice and deep spiritual faith. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Irma Higgins and Katharine F. Gensler, very special cousin, Joy Asevedo, and godchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
Margie is preceded in death by her son, F. Wayne Frey; parents, Herbert J. Higgins, Sr. and Jeannette Schirm Higgins; brothers, Herbert J. Higgins, Jr. and Peter D. Higgins.
Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Wednesday, February 18 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Avenue on Thursday, February 19 from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. celebrated by Father Philip Eapen.
Interment will take place at Resthaven Garden of Memories.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, Missionaries of Charity at St. Agnes Church Parish, The Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the Phuc Le Family, the OLOM morning coffee shop group, the Thursday lunch staff at Dempsey's on Coursey, the Ethyl Lunch Bunch Ladies, Woman's Hospital volunteers, and all who have been a friend to her. Everyone's friendship and support has been greatly appreciated by the family.
