Marie Schofield

October 26, 1918 — September 18, 2016

After 97 years of a wonderful life marked primarily by hard work serving her savior and others, (Flora) Marie Schofield departed her earthly home on Sunday, September 18th, with loving family members at her side. Marie was a native of Opp, Alabama, and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge. She was the first born of Zoner and Ada Short. As the eldest of nine sisters and six brothers and the mother of six children herself, she was a caregiver and mentor to many throughout her life. She had a special gift as a seamstress. It was put to use making clothing for family and friends ranging from flour sack work clothes to fine wedding dresses.

Marie married 26-year-old Otha Green Schofield at age 17. He was the love of her life and she said, "the best looking man she had ever seen." She was often heard to say, "I have two nice looking boys but neither is half as good looking as my husband." Otha tested her patience from time to time but she stood by him through it all. There was never any doubt of their love for each other through over half a century of marriage.

Special mention must be made of her son, Gary. He loved his dad, but had a special closeness to his mother. That love and closeness continued to her passing. He was her primary caregiver for many years in her later life, and ensured her every need was met. Every mother deserves a "Gary."

Her husband Otha, infant son Paul, and her eldest daughter Vivian preceded Marie in death. She leaves behind children, Alice, Lynn, Gary and Connie, also former and present children's spouses, Chapman Sanford, James (Jimmy) Whitaker, Cherie Schofield and Herman (Bud) Chandler.

Her 15 siblings, surviving and departed (with spouses in parenthesis), are: Gladys Cashio (Sam), Foster, Merle Freeman (Bratton), Nava Hutchinson (Hardy), Mildred Kimball/Labatut (Donald/Gene), Owren, Margaret Schwabauer (Donald), Thomas (Betty), Benjamin (Ruby), Edward (Helen), Carroll (Sarah), Glenda Labatut (Gene), Dianne Kondroik (John), Dale Peden (Jim), Cita Johnson (Clarence).

Marie had countless other nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, neighbors, friends, church family and caregivers whom she dearly loved. We thank them all for their love and friendship. The family invites all to join them at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, for visitation on Thursday, September 22, 2016, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm with visitation continuing Friday from 9:00am until 11:00am.
