Maggie May Wingate of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. Maggie was born on March 23, 1934, to Woodrow May and Louise Duvall-May. Shortly after meeting a tall handsome sailor who was just returning from active duty, she married James M. Wingate on November 15, 1952, and they were together for over 70 years.
Maggie is survived by her son, James E. Wingate (Jennifer); her brother, Michael May; her grandchildren; Joshua E. Shealy, Rebecca Wingate-Shelton, Jason E. Wingate, Robbi Nicole Wingate-McManus, and James R. Wingate; and her great-grandchildren; Victoire Wingate, Hallie Wingate, James Wingate, Jr., Lily G. Shelton, Abigail Marie McManus, and Rylee Nicole McManus.
She was preceded in death by husband, James M. Wingate; her parents, Woodrow and Louise May; sister, Addie May Brown; and brothers, Warren May and Jerry May; her daughter, Ann Elizabeth Wingate-Shealy; her sons, Scott R. Wingate and Jeffrey M. Wingate; and grandson, Matthew Wingate.
Visitation will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, from 9:00 am until Funeral Service at 11:30 am. Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Maggie was a long-time member of Parkview Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Maggie's name can be made to the church or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to offer special thanks to St. Joseph Hospice/Carpenter House and their nursing staff for the care and support given to Maggie and her family. Also, to Parkview Baptist Church, Dr. Chris DeGeorge, Rev. Merlin Liverman, the church ladies, friends, and family who supported us with prayers during this time of loss.
