Marcel J. "Poppa" Leumas, Jr., 85, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016, at Baton Rouge General Hospital after a brief illness. He passed peacefully with his loving wife of 63 years, Dolores "Poppins" Leumas, by his side.
Marcel leaves behind his wife, Dolores Sullivan Leumas, of Baton Rouge; sons, Mike Leumas and wife Carmella, Chris Leumas and wife Becky, Greg Leumas and wife Donna; daughter, Kathy Loyd; sons, John Leumas and wife Sharon, Tommy Leumas and wife Anita; grandchildren, Cecilia White and husband Jeremy, Candice Fisher and husband Abraham, Jeffrey Loyd and wife Sadie, Robbie Leumas, Beth Leumas, Michelle Emery and husband Lee, Andrew Loyd and wife Hannah, Jordan Leumas, Jennifer Leumas, Brett Leumas, Caitlin Leumas, Ricky Leumas, and Hannah Leumas; great-grandchildren, Hazel White and Payton, Donovan, and Delilah Fisher; and numerous nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marcel J. Leumas, Sr.; mother, Magdalen B. Leumas; sister, Marilyn Leumas Coker and husband James Coker; and son, James Leumas and his wife Julie.
Marcel was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 26, 1930. He attended St. Rita Elementary School and Jesuit High School, then graduated from Tulane University in Civil Engineering. Marcel served as a LT JG in the US Navy in Newport Beach, RI, and Pensacola, FL. His successful engineering career spanned nearly forty years, and he retired as Manager of Engineering and Maintenance from Murphy Oil Corp.
A devout Catholic, Poppa devoted his life to both God and the Church. He also devoted his life to loving his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, making it a point to attend every baptism, graduation, birthday party, and special event he was able to. Poppa was a kind and gentle man, and his positive outlook on life and sense of humor were contagious to all around him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 15615 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70817, from 11:30 am until Requiem Mass at 1:30 pm.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
