Manel Traylor

Manel was a recent citizen of Natchez, Miss, a city that she loved. Before that she was a longtime resident of Monroe, Louisiana, a community that she loved, and in which she raised her family. Manel passed away on September 24, 2013 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was born September 18, 1954 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Manel was the daughter of Cyril and Therese Meewella of Colombo, Sri Lanka. She graduated from Milagiriya Girls High School, Colombo in 1971. She graduated in 1980 from the Woodlands Training Center for the Montessori Method of Education in Maharagama, Sri Lanka. Locations that Manel lived in and loved were Columbo, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka London, England Baton Rouge and Monroe, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi. She was thoroughly and belligerently an American. Manel worked as a Montessori teacher at the Montessori School of Baton Rouge from 1982 1986 she ran her own school in Monroe from 1986 1989, and worked as a teacher at Grace Episcopal School in Monroe from 1989 to 2011. Manel took an extreme interest in, more than anything: teaching children then, her animals, growing saltwater coral and fish, and orchids and roses. Manel is survived by her husband and best friend of 32 years, Dwain Traylor daughter Jenna Nicole Ortego and husband Jeffrey Ortego of Baton Rouge son Christopher Caleb Traylor of New Orleans daughter Alexis Louise Traylor of Monroe and her very adored grandchildren Karleigh, Clark and Dylan Ortego. She is survived by brother Samath Wijesinghe and wife Kusum brother Upendra Wijesinghe and wife Shanthi sister Mary and husband Antony Perera sister Anne Meewella brother Chrys Meewella and wife Prema brotherinlaw Doug Traylor and wife Sandra sisterinlaw Debbie and husband Stephen Dixon. She is survived by nephews and nieces, including Priyan and Romina Meewella Hannah Traylor Dave Marley and Nicholas Dixon and Sriyan and Ruwani Perera. Manel was preceded in death by her parents. Pallbearers will be Nicholas Dixon, Dave Marley Dixon, Caleb Traylor, Doug Traylor, Stephen Dixon and Priyan Meewella.Visitation is noon Friday September 27 with the funeral service to follow at 2 PM, at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70816. Eddie White of the South Baton Rouge Church of Christ will conduct the service.
