She started her career in sales with Standard Motors Automobile Dealership and later went to Adams Toyota, where she was a sales director. She also earned the level of director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. She reached the pinnacle of her career by becoming regional vice president of A.L. Williams Corp. She finished her career as a representative of Primerica. She also held a real estate investments and brokers license for Louisiana. A resident of Baton Rouge, she died at 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She was 72 and a native of Opelousas. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Monday, Aug. 31, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting continues at the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Entombment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. Survived by her husband, William H. Bill Martinez; a son, Arthur G. Root IV; daughter-in-law, Jill Root; two sisters, Johnnie Vern Hernandez and husband Joe F. Hernandez, and Cynthia Jadine Brown and husband Phillip M. Brown; and five grandchildren, Abbey Lynn Root, Paige E. Root, Cullen J. Root, Blair K. Root and Carson K. Root. Preceded in death by her parents, James K. and Etta K. Thurman; and a son, Jay K. Root. Pallbearers will be Arthur G. Root Iv, Cullen J. Root, Carson K. Root, James K. Hernandez, James Hernandez Jr., Dennis W. McCain and Brother James L. Woods. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Whittle, Patrick Miller, Paul Pepitone and Robert Hazel. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bogalusa. She was a loving mother, wife, mother-in-law and grandmother. She devoted her entire Christian life to her entire family.
