Louise Mestayer Lou Garrett, beloved wife of David, peacefully left this world to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. She was born Jan. 31, 1932, in Alexandria, the daughter of the late Edwin Albert Mestayer and Bertha Gingras Mestayer. Lou married David Henry Garrett, of Jonesboro, on Oct. 12, 1951, beginning a lifelong partnership of deep and abiding love, mutual respect and admiration, and tireless dedication to their four children. Lou was an energetic and devoted mother, lovingly serving as her children's mentor, friend, confidante, adviser and cheerleader. She was a passionate believer in recognizing and developing one's talents, inspiring her children and others to look inside themselves to find the self-respect and confidence to follow their dreams and reach their goals. She received bachelor of science and master of education degrees at LSU. Lou was an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and enjoyed performing on stage while in college, and later in the Monroe Little Theatre. A gifted teacher, Lou's career spanned several decades, and was highlighted by her tenure at St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge, where she was a reading specialist and a dynamic member of the school community. Cherishing the spirit and hope of young people, she developed the Jolly Reading Lab in her Baton Rouge home on Jolly Drive, where she nurtured and guided children with their reading skills. The past 10 years of her career were spent teaching second-grade children at Wedgewood Elementary. She was a member of Charity Ball Association, the Junior League of Baton Rouge, Mortar Board and a Eucharistic minister at St. Aloysius Parish. Lou was a beautiful person and a very wise lady, someone you could easily talk to about anything. People were drawn to her because of her engaging spirit, disarming sense of humor, remarkable ability to listen and genuine empathy. She had a wonderful capacity to make everyone feel special and important. Lou truly had a heart of gold and she will be dearly missed by everyone who loved her so. Lou is survived by her husband of 58 years, David; and four children, Chris Garrett and Cissy Landry, both of Baton Rouge, Kevin Garrett and his wife, Jannean, of Edmond, Okla., and Ginger Quinn and her husband, Brian, of Little Rock, Ark. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, who affectionately called her Lou Lou, Beau, Libby and Jenny Landry and MacKayla Catron, all of Baton Rouge, Holly Bourgeois and her husband, Lee, of Saginaw, Mich., Gabe Garrett and his wife, Diana, of Shreveport, Robin Selman and Andrew Garrett, both of Edmond, as well as Caitlin, Garrett and Virginia Quinn, all of Little Rock; and three great-grandchildren, Abigail Selman, of Edmond, and Ava and Camille Bourgeois, both of Saginaw. She was predeceased by her sister, Betty Mestayer Pearce; and her grandson, David Neal Garrett. The family would like to extend special thanks to her kind and faithful caregivers, Jo, Barbara and Mary, as well as acknowledge the lifelong friendship of Martha Jane and George Grammer. Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6 p.m. until recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Aloysius Church, 2025 Stuart Ave., on Friday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m., by the Rev. Gerald Burns. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2025 Stuart Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70808, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, P.O.
